TIL that I needed to go faster on the treadmill for running portions, not slower. It was so much more bearable than trying to maintain a jog.

Treadmill cardio works now.

I did 2.5km with alternating runs and walks. Extra sprint and jog outside.

YES!

It turns out 'jogging' may be hazardous to my hip and buttock muscles when I end up straining myself to keep at the machine's opinion of a 'jog', which is not slow enough to be a reasonable walking pace but not fast enough for a decent jog.

I can walk 6km/hr, I can jog at 7.3km/hr. Between those two is the zone where I'm likely to end up straining a buttock with consequences for days after...

Oh yes. The pavement is intuitive because you set your own speed. My problem with pavement is that 'setting my own speed' also looks like "I can't be arsed".

The treadmill makes me keep going...except that when it wants to go at a pace that doesn't work with my stride, then I end up in strife!

Your body will adjust, it takes a few goes.
