Exercise machines like treadmills, elliptical machines, and whatnot are very effective, but they can also be very...boring. So how do I keep myself motivated to get on that machine three times a week, month in and month out? With Dr. Who!

I'm a brand-new Who fan, captivated by lovely Matt Smith's captivating loveliness, but I know (who doesn't?) that there was much, much Whoness before him. So I've loaded up on dvd sets, Ninth and Tenth Doctors, and watch one episode each time it's elliptical day. This is the only time I watch these - no sneaking them upstairs to the home theater system. Ellipping time goes by like no time when I'm having so. much. fun! (Today was my first Captain Jack Harkness episode; I've been looking forward to it for ages and ages.)

What's your trick for making machine time go by?

I have one of those Tony Little Gazelle things which I set up and only use in the winter when walking outside is difficult. When that time come, I usually have access to the television and can watch movies and such. It's a good way to clock time too - if I know how long a program is, then I don't have to check the clock and forget about it.

But, aside from that, I have also been known to read a book while doing it. I am stationary with no chance of tripping over my feet, so why not! :)

The reason I first got the gazelle is that it was low impact on my knees. At the time I was carrying almost 300 pounds, so I needed something that I could do that wouldn't kill me. It fit the bill perfectly.
