[personal profile] muck_a_luck posting in [community profile] exercise_every_day
Hey, EED community!

Here is your daily check-in post! Hope everyone is having a great day!

If you are posting for the first time, or new to the community, please review the community's standards, below.

1. Mod (that's me!) will post a Daily Check In post, for those who prefer to note their daily activities in response to a prompt. Please only place exercise comments here.

2. All members are encouraged to post daily independent posts about their activities, if they prefer that to a prompt.

3. Please place any NON-EXERCISE comments in independent update posts and behind a cut. Some people are sensitive to discussion of diet and nutrition. That is integral to many people's exercise activities, so I want members to be able to discuss that, but for those who are here strictly to log exercise, I would like them to be able to avert their eyes.

4. Everyone is encouraged to introduce themselves, discuss their exercise goals, and post updates on their activities. "I finally made it to running a mile!" or "I kicked up into handstand today!" are updates that we all want to hear about and share! Please put long posts and entries involving diet and nutrition behind a cut, though.

5. Aside from intro posts and injury announcements, please try to include an exercise update in every post.

Yoga and rhythm boxing (the "advanced" version, and although I knocked out my punching bag that looks to me like a big energizer battery, I really sucked at it), and 8000 steps (double desk shift at work today...)

Elliptical machine, stretches, meditation. Probably some yoga coming up after work tonight.

Did a few rounds of the plank thing. Is it bad that my instinct is to go down dog-up dog-plank-up dog-down dog instead of down dog-plank-up dog-down dog?

I don't know about, 'Bad' - but the transition from down-down to plank to chatturanga works your shoulders in a way that prepares you for inversions.

You can do down-dog to up-dog to plank without really working your arms/shoulders at all. But it is doing *something*, so I wouldn't get hung up on it.

Nine bodyweight or unweighted exercises (different from yesterday's.) One set of fifteen reps each. A few of them (dumbbell bench press, for example) I really should be adding weight to, but I don't want to go to the gym. And some of them (split squats, ugh) I can't complete fifteen reps even without weight.

I'm a big believer in gym-avoidance

FWIW, in the UK at least you can get an adjustable dumbbell kit (two little bars and a bunch of small plates) relatively cheaply. I got one several years back and I'm still using it.

If you don't want any expenditure, then you might be able to substitute bodyweight exercises -- for example, push-ups (starting with wall or counter or knee push-ups or wherever you're at) work the same muscle as a bench press, plus some extra ones.

There's also this post (and comments) which has stuff on making your own sandbag or medicine ball and other free/cheap weights stuff:

Bags of cat litter get some appreciation in the comments -- cat litter bench press, maybe? *g*

(Seriously, there are reasons why people train with sandbags. Unwieldy weights make you work harder.)

Work ate my lunch, so body-weight exercises in our fitness center. Was a good workout.

20 min of pilates, then some planks. Right elbow joint still complains if a lift more than a couple of pounds, but pushing/static holds are ok. I'm getting antsy and I miss weight training. I'm going to have to figure out a routine I can work around the injury.

I rested on Monday. Today was another episode of death by crossfit (5 rounds of 400m run, 10 pull-ups, 20 wall-balls). I think I made it through 3 rounds, maybe. I lost track.

Body-weight exercises because I didn't really feel like getting out the weights: planks and single-legged squats and tries at push-ups and sit-ups (2*20 + 1*30!)
