Wednesday, October 13, 2010, Check-In

Hey, EED community!

Here is your daily check-in post! Hope everyone is having a great day!

If you are posting for the first time, or new to the community, please review the community's standards, below.

1. Mod (that's me!) will post a Daily Check In post, for those who prefer to note their daily activities in response to a prompt. Please only place exercise comments here.

2. All members are encouraged to post daily independent posts about their activities, if they prefer that to a prompt.

3. Please place any NON-EXERCISE comments in independent update posts and behind a cut. Some people are sensitive to discussion of diet and nutrition. That is integral to many people's exercise activities, so I want members to be able to discuss that, but for those who are here strictly to log exercise, I would like them to be able to avert their eyes.

4. Everyone is encouraged to introduce themselves, discuss their exercise goals, and post updates on their activities. "I finally made it to running a mile!" or "I kicked up into handstand today!" are updates that we all want to hear about and share! Please put long posts and entries involving diet and nutrition behind a cut, though.

5. Aside from intro posts and injury announcements, please try to include an exercise update in every post.

Hello! This is my first post. I'm going to a gym today for the first time since my second year of university! It is only for the induction course but I am looking forward to getting into it.

Any suggestions on what I should ask? It's a university gym and I'm thinking of signing up for some of the dance aerobics classes.

Hi and welcome!

Any suggestions on what I should ask?

That depends on what you're interested in. *g* Are you mostly interested in classes? Do you want to do anything like weight training, where it'd be handy to have someone show you how to use the equipment? Do you have any special requirements to work around?

I was thinking of signing up for one of the advertised "retro-cise" dancey cardio classes because I like dancing and I like having the peer pressure of a class to stop me giving up and going home after 15 minutes. I think I would like to do weight training things but not right away, but it would probably be a good idea to learn how to use things now. I have no physical accomodation needs.

Sounds like you're sorted, then. *g*

FWIW, I recently did a couple of posts in [community profile] lifting_heavy_things on how not to be intimidated by the free weights room, in case that's any use.

Try things until you find something that grabs you enough to keep you coming, even when you are tired.

Doesn't matter what that ends up being.

Last night I felt a bit restless before bedtime, so I did a 40-minute Quieting set from Barbara Benagh's Power Yoga for Every Body. Reckless as well as restless - I selected the "Advanced" set, figuring, "It's quieting - how bad can it be?" It was wonderful! The breathing and stretches exercises were the same as on the Beginner and Intermediate sets, but she added some wonderful, deep twist, and a long lonnnng forward bend. I finally feel like I'm moving forward in my practice.

Have done yoga (almost managed the pose I'm working on! but not quite) and pushups, plus doing the cleaning.

Ooh, what's the pose you're working on?

Wheel pose. I've been able to almost get there for a while, but I can see the light now, haha.

Morning yoga, then shadow yoga, where the teacher gave us some very effective tips for doing a jump through to dandasana.

Then made us practice it.

A lot.

(Okay, it was great.)

Now I will finish my cup of tea and then go grocery-schlepping (through the park).

I asked our Pilates teacher for a good workout (not enough core strength for the inversions and balances I want to do).

So, she hit us with an advanced mat class (with weights) that wore us all out. Was great, but I had trouble getting my shirt off afterwards. Oh yeah... difficult reaching up to get the naproxen.

This evening I did Exhale Core Fusion Thighs and Glutes. For the thigh part I didn't use the chair for support, and just balanced on my toes with my heels up off the floor. I had to use the chair for the glutes section. Total time - 50 minutes.

Sorry - I've missed a few days. I've been put down hard by cold + allergies, but hopefully I'm over the worst of it.... If tomorrow morning feels ok, I'll go for a walk :)

Yoga and a couple of hours worth of lawn mowing and leaf raking.
