Hitting things.

I would greatly appreciate advice on purchasing and installing SOMETHING TO HIT in my home. I have an unfinished basement with exposed beams, and I could hang something from the underside of my deck.  I would entertain the idea of a free-standing bag hanger or a punching dummy.

If you have any experience with punching bags or punching dummies, I'd love to hear from you.

My therapist is of the opinion that hitting things is a necessary part of my recovery (long-winded explanation of trauma theory and completing the escape redacted).  Also, it seems that it is an upper body exercise I can do without aggravating old injuries.

I used to have a sand-filled-base standing kick bag, which was really awesome. I just ran out of room after a move.

I have a permanent injury from using a punching bag (for martial arts, not for this).

I highly recommend using something lower-impact instead.

From what I hear, exposed beams are excellent for hanging things off -- I haven't tried this myself, but there are specific attachment for hanging bags off beams, e.g.:
